Techniques for Single Lung Ventilation in Infants and Children
نویسنده
چکیده
There have been parallel advancements in pediatric airway equipment, including the development of pediatric sized bronchial blockers, Univent tubes, and double lumen tubes, providing the ability to isolate the lung in pediatric patients as small as full term neonates. Despite this widespread ability, there remain significant regional differences in the use of lung isolation techniques, some centers utilize lung isolation for most thoracic procedures, while other centers rarely isolate the lung in infants and children. Although both open and minimally invasive thoracic surgical techniques can be successfully completed without lung isolation, the ability to deflate the ipsilateral lung provides improved surgical conditions and optimal visualization of thoracic structures. An understanding of the different techniques for lung isolation in pediatric patients is important for any anesthetist taking care of this patient population. 23 OCT 2015

Single-lung ventilation in infants and children.
During the past decade, the use of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has dramatically increased in children as well as adults. Although VATS can be performed while both lungs are being ventilated, single-lung ventilation (SLV) is desirable during VATS. In addition, anaesthesiologists are performing (and paediatric surgeons are requesting) SLV more frequently for open thoracotomies in ...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW Surgical interventions, including video-assisted thoracoscopic surgeries, are increasingly being performed in the neonatal and pediatric populations. Thoracic anesthesia in infants and children poses special challenges for the anesthesiologist. These include assessment of the patient's clinical condition, obtaining and maintaining single lung ventilation, and maintaining adequ...
متن کاملIncidence and risk factors of pneumothorax in premature low birth weight infants under mechanical ventilation
Objective: pulmonary air-leakage especially pneumothorax (ptx), is a severe complication in neonates. The aim of this study was to assess the predisposing factors and frequency of ptx among the low birth weight (LBW) premature infants, under mechanical ventilation. Methods: This cross sectional study was performed in 121 LBW intubated premature infants at neonatal intensive care unit of a child...
متن کاملAir Trapping on Chest CT Is Associated with Worse Ventilation Distribution in Infants with Cystic Fibrosis Diagnosed following Newborn Screening
BACKGROUND In school-aged children with cystic fibrosis (CF) structural lung damage assessed using chest CT is associated with abnormal ventilation distribution. The primary objective of this analysis was to determine the relationships between ventilation distribution outcomes and the presence and extent of structural damage as assessed by chest CT in infants and young children with CF. METHO...
متن کاملSingle- and double-lung ventilation in infants and children undergoing thoracoscopic lung resection.
INTRODUCTION Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has gained wide acceptance for the pediatric population. Single-lung ventilation (SLV) has been suggested for thoracoscopic lung resection to provide better surgical exposure, but its role and sequelae compared with double-lung ventilation (DLV) have not been determined. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and effects...
